MEMORANDUM FOR JEFFREY D. FEIT
PROGRAM MANAGER
DOE TECHNICAL STANDARDS PROGRAM
OFFICE OF QUALITY ASSURANCE AND NUCLEAR SAFETY
MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS
FROM: GARRETT A. SMITH
DIRECTOR
OFFICE OF NUCLEAR SAFETY
OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, SAFETY
AND SECURITY
SUBJECT: Change Notice to Department of Energy Handbook 1081 2014,
Primer on Spontaneous Heating and Pyrophoricity
This memorandum forwards “Change Notice Number 1” (CN1) for DOE Handbook 1081-
2014, in accordance with DOE Technical Standards Program Procedures No. 7,
“Maintenance of DOE Technical Standards” (DOE-TSPP-7, September 2013) Section 4.2.
This CN1 addresses a typographical error in the section on Pyrophoricity of plutonium that
appears in the text on page 29 (second paragraph). In that sentence the word “greater” is
being removed and replaced with “less” because it was pointed out that the existing text is in
error. Corrected sentence is: “Pieces of plutonium characterized as having a minimum
thickness greater-than of 1.00 mm (0.04 in) and a specific surface area greater less than 1 cm?
/g (71 in? /Ib) requires temperatures in excess of 400 °C (752° F) to ignite.
An electronic file in MS Word format is included with this memorandum. If there are any
questions, please contact Mr. James Bisker in the Office of Nuclear Safety Basis and Facility
Design (AU-31) at (301) 903-6542, or by e-mail at Jim.Bisker@hq.doe.gov.
